STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Mississippi Department of Transportation will bring its Winter Weather College Tour to Mississippi State University Jan. 16.

MDOT officials are inviting all university students, as well as community residents, to visit the tailgating tent on the Drill Field from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to learn more about safe winter driving.

In addition to driving tips, the presentation will include ways to prepare vehicles for cold weather and recommendations for assembling vehicle emergency kits, said Jason Scott, public information officer in the agency's Public Affairs Division.

"Because we are MDOT, we're mainly focused on driving tips and vehicle-related information, getting your car ready for the winter weather through January, February and March and preparing an emergency car kit in case you get stranded on the side of the road in the cold," he said. "One of the best ways to stay safe is to make preparations before winter weather conditions occur."

The information-sharing program also will include giveaways of some emergency kit materials, and a door prize will be available.

"We're encouraging Starkville residents, as well as students, to come see us," Scott said. "We want to get everyone involved, give out good information and keep students and the community safe as they survive their winter drive."
