National Suicide Prevention Week
Gillian Goodloe, a food science, nutrition and health promotion graduate student from Canton, holds backpacks being placed on MSU's Drill Field this week as part of the university's observance of National Suicide Prevention Week. The Department of Health Promotion and Wellness annually holds this event to raise awareness for the approximately 48,000 lives lost to suicide in the U.S. each year and encourage help-seeking. The display includes 1,100 backpacks to represent the estimated number of college students who die each year from suicide. Suicide prevention resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Crisis Text Line are available, as well as information about free counseling for MSU students provided by Student Counseling Services.
